About Teressa

I am a 44 –year-old mother of two teenage boys, ages 19 and 16, and two furbabies, a black lab/chow rescue and a yellow lab/pitbull.  I have been married for 23 years to my high school sweetheart.

If you ask my boys what phrase sums me up they would tell you, “Puppies and babies.”  It’s true that I seem to be the baby and dog whisperer.  I can walk into a room of children who don’t know me and within 15 minutes at last 5 of will have climbed onto my lap.  I have never met a dog or child who wouldn’t listen to me, at least for a minute.

When my oldest son, who is a fast learner, was in kindergarten, we realized that there was no way a teacher in a classroom of 25 or more could give him the intellectual stimulation he needed.  So, the next year, we started homeschooling.  I taught him for 6 years until he wanted to transfer back to public school.  He graduated public high school in 2010 and is currently attending community college with plans to transfer to a university and achieve a degree in linguistics.  Our  youngest was homeschooled for 7 years.  The last year of homeschool he chose to complete two grades in one year so he could enter public school at the same grade level as the majority of his friends.  He attended public school for 3 years, then came back home and is now attending online school, which better accommodates his wonky sleep schedule.

But there’s a lot more to me than just children and animals. I was an Air Force wife for 20 years – my husband served active duty for 5 years and was in the reserves for 15 before retiring.  We owned our own retail store for 4 years and I have over 19 years experience being self-employed.  My specialty is administrative and bookkeeping services.

For the past 2 ½ years we have been surviving off of just my paycheck while my husband has been struggling to find a job since our store closed.  I have become an avid couponer and deal-seeker.  I have also learned the ins and outs of unemployment, Medi-Cal, and various other assistance programs in the state of California.

When our store failed in 2009, our youngest son was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), depression, and chronic insomnia.  It has been quite a journey since then with changes in medications, therapy, and lots of talking and hugs but we are on the other side and so proud of the young man he is becoming!!

Our oldest son recently came out as transgendered. I have been trying to learn as much as I can about that topic so I can better understand what he is going through, as well as be able to help explain to our family and friends.

I am an exuberant Flybaby – have my binder, duster, etc., but I am always fighting the clutter and my other family members in the battle for organization.  I am really good at setting up and running yard sales and have had some fair success selling on Ebay and Craigslist.

Bible study and prayer are very important to me as a devout Christian.  We raised our boys in the church, but also taught them to learn about and have an appreciation for other religions.

My health is a big concern.  I am 30 pounds overweight and have cough-variant asthma and high blood pressure.  I have been a member of Sparkpeople since 2008 and have lost 16 pounds in the past two  years.  I am committed to working out every day and have come to love strength training.

I love to cook and find it relaxing to try new recipes – even though my husband is a pretty picky eater and my oldest son is vegetarian, so many times I am the only one eating what I cooked!!

When I was a child I thought I would be a world-famous novelist someday.  I have always enjoyed writing and recently realized that blogging is a way for me to fulfill my passion but also to reach out to others who may be dealing with some of the same challenges with which I have also struggled.
